How To Manage Conflict Within The Workplace
Workplaces of all kinds are breeding grounds for conflict. These conflicts can stem from a variety of sources and, if left unchecked, can seriously affect the productivity of any work environment. Here is how you can manage conflict within the workplace so that you don’t have to find out just how bad it can get.
Acknowledge Conflict
The first step to managing conflict is acknowledging it. Don’t dismiss it as something every workplace has to deal with or as something people should take care of themselves. If they could do that then they would have. If you see conflict, acknowledge that it is there and that it is a problem.
Ask Those Involved What The Problem Is
Let those involved express their sides of the story without interruption. Don’t interrupt, contradict, or offer your opinion. Listening to everyone’s story in this manner is an important first step to resolving conflict. In many cases, those involved in a conflict just see a situation differently and knowing that other people see the situation in another way can help.
Ask What Employees Can Do To Make It Better
People love to complain but they’re not always so quick to move from looking at the problem to seeking out solutions. Again, you want to ask everyone involved what can be done to fix or improve the problem. You can ask them what others can do and what they can do as well.
Forcing those involved to come up with concrete action steps that others can do to help and that they themselves can do to help will shed light on the real problem. Once they have made suggestions ask if the situation would be resolved if those suggestions were implemented. You want to make sure that you are getting to the real issue and this is a great way to do that.
Find A Compromise
Maybe they can come up with a compromise on their own or maybe you can step in and give them one. It’s possible to find a way that everybody wins even if everyone has to give a little on what they want. Have everyone agree to the compromise and to put the whole issue behind them.
Ensure Follow Through
You want to make sure that everyone does their part in resolving the conflict. If the conflict was important enough to interfere with daily operations then it is important enough to work on. You may even wish to schedule a follow up meeting to discuss how the resolution is working out. Some people like holding onto conflict or creating conflict no matter what is going on so give them a chance to end it. If the conflict does not end or if someone creates new conflict then it may be a matter of asking someone if they can work without conflict or if maybe they should move on to a new job.
This is how you manage conflict in the workplace. It’s not about joining the battle but about finding a solution. You can end conflict in the workplace if you try. Just pay attention to who starts another round just for fun.
